A large number of students on Tuesday protested in Delhi University against the ABVP after it was accused of attacking students, lecturers and journalists in the campus.

The students massed outside the Khalsa College shouting slogans against the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad and Delhi Police over the February 21-22 disturbances in the university campus.

The protest was called by the All India Students Association (AISA), a Left-leaning student body whose members were involved in a clash with ABVP activists last week.

Also on Tuesday, members of the Congress-affiliated National Students Union of India (NSUI) staged a hunger strike in the campus, also against the RSS-affiliated ABVP.

"After the Ramjas incident and violence, a majority of students who want a peaceful campus are scared... There is hardly any space for debate," NSUI President Amrita Dhawan told media.

"Nothing justifies violence. We live in a democratic country where people can have different opinions," Dhawan added.

The AISA said the Tuesday protest was not of the AISA.

"Please don't call it an AISA march. It is a march of DU students against the hooliganism of ABVP and for freedom of expression and debate," said an AISA member.

Tuesday's protest came a day after the ABVP held a "Tiranga march" in the campus against "Left-leaning students supporting anti-national activities".
