Delhi gang-rape victim in extremely critical condition in Singapore Hospital Last Updated : 27 Dec 2012 12:32:45 PM IST Delhi gang-rape victim remains Critical in Singapore Hospital
Battling for life for the last 11 days, the 23-year-old Delhi gang-rape victim was admitted to a multi-organ transplant specialty hospital in Singapore on Thursday morning.Doctors said that "she is in an "extremely critical condition".
"The patient arrived at Mount Elizabeth Hospital's Intensive Care Unit this morning in an extremely critical condition," a spokesperson of the hospital told
"She is being examined and the hospital is working with the Indian High Commission. We request that the privacy of the patient and family be respected," the spokesperson said.
In New Delhi, Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde said the government would spare no effort for the treatment of the victim and it would meet all the costs for her treatment.
"We are all aware of the critical condition of victim.Since the day of the incident, it has been our endeavour to provide her the best of medical care. Despite the best efforts of our doctors, the victim continues to be critical and her fluctuating health remains a big cause of concern to all of us," he said in a statement.
Shinde said when the government was advised by a team of doctors that she may be shifted abroad for treatment, it had ordered India's High Commissioner in Singapore to make necessary arrangements.
"Considering the travel time, the doctors have suggested Mt Elizabeth Hospital, Singapore... Indian doctors have spoken to the doctors of the said hospital and shared the details of the patient," he said.
The minister said arrangements have also been made for the family to stay in Singapore with the patient as the treatment may stretch to many weeks.
Official sources said passport and Singapore visa for the girl and some of her family members who accompanied her were expedited by the External Affairs Ministry. A meeting of the Union Cabinet presided by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh took the decision to set up a one-person Commission headed by Justice (retd) Usha Mehra to identify lapses and fix responsibility in the girl's case.
Medical Superintendent of the Safdarjung Hospital Dr B D Athani last night said that "the treatment might take longer." Athani said the girl has suffered severe intestinal and abdominal injuries and more than once she would have to undergo treatment in Singapore which could take several weeks. Parts of the girl's intestine were surgically removed.
The decision to shift the girl was taken at the highest level of the Indian government as the 23-year-old girl was battling for life for the past 10 days at Safdarjung hospital after being brutally gangraped in Delhi.
Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore has a state-of-the-art facility for multi-organ transplant, doctors attending on her decided that she should be taken there for treatment that could last for several weeks. Therefore she was flown to Singapore in an air ambulance for specialised treatment in a premier hospital.
The plane carrying the girl landed at the Changi International Airport at 7.30 AM (5 AM IST), the Indian High Commission in Singapore said, confirming the girl's arrival.
On December 16, the girl was gang-raped and brutally assaulted in a moving bus and was undergoing treatment at a hospital in Delhi. The girl, who continues to remain in a critical condition, remained on ventilator support during most part of her treatment in Delhi.
Dr B D Athani, Medical Superintendent of the Safdarjung Hospital where the victim was rushed to after being gang-raped and brutally assaulted on December 16, said she was given "the best of the available medical aid" during her 10-day treatment at the hospital ."With fortitude and courage, the girl survived the after-effects of the injuries so far well. But the condition continues to be critical.
"Based on the advice of a team of doctors, the Government of India has made arrangements for the patient being shifted in a well-equipped air ambulance," he told reporters late tonight. He said that the girl has suffered severe intestinal and abdominal injuries.
Athani said that Singapore was chosen as the destination for the treatment as it was closer from India and the hospital there has state-of-the-art multi-organ transplant facility.
Athani said the doctors' team which was attending on her for the past 10 days suggested that the journey should be minimal."The team of doctors decided that the patient be shifted to Mount Elizabeth Hospital (in Singapore). The said hospital has the state-of-the-art facility for multi-organ transplant.
The treatment might take longer," he said. The Medical Superintendent of Safdarjung Hospital said more than once that the girl would have to undergo treatment in Singapore which could take several weeks.
"She was being provided the best available aid by a team of specialised doctors. She had to be operated upon thrice,"he said.Source: IANS, Other Agencies, Staff Reporters
