Police use water cannons on protesters

Delhi Police on Saturday used water cannons and tear gas shells to disperse protesters who were marching towards Rashtrapati Bhavan demanding justice for the 23-year-old gang rape victim.

As anti-rape protests intensified in Delhi, Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde met  Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to discuss the current situation. Ten students were injured and another police van was damaged in the fresh round of clashes.

Thirteen protesters were injured, of which nine were taken to RML hospital and four to LNJP hospital. Most of the protesters have suffered minor head injuries.

As more people joined the protests at India gate and Rashtrapati Bhawan, many protesters questioned as to where was Congress's 'youth leader' Rahul Gandhi now. Some of the slogans raised at India Gate also said, "Don't teach your daughters what to wear, teach your sons how to behave."

There was chaos outside North Block  as police  lathicharged  protesters who tried to break barricades to enter the premises .The protesters, however, braved the water cannons in the winter chill and refused to leave the high-security area.

Thousands of people have gathered at India Gate and Raisina Hill in New Delhi on Saturday and started moving towards Rashtrapati Bhawan. demanding tougher punishment for rapists and more attention to women's safety by the government and the police.

Water cannon was again used by police on the protesters a little after noon. Policemen fired 10 rounds of teargas shells at the protesters who had reassembled after the first round of tear gas shelling and water cannons.

Protesters refused to budge from the high-security area at Raisina Hill and clashed with the policemen and RAF personnel.

Meanwhile, Minister of State for Home Affairs RPN Singh appealed to the protesters not to resort to violence. "We have assured on the floor of House and every platform possible that strictest action will be taken against the accused. Police has been asked to show restraint but I want to tell boys and girls that breaking barriers won't help (to solve the issue)," Singh said.

The young students broke security cordons erected on Rajpath and managed to reach near Raisina Hills where they were stopped.

Roads leading to the North, South Block and Rashtrapati Bhawan have been blocked. The police has called in reinforcements; they have even arrested many people.

The rage spread, rapidly and steadily, through India's national capital on Saturday  as students, activists and just concerned citizens gathered at various places in the city to protest the torture and gang-rape of a young woman, now battling to stay alive in a Delhi hospital.

Call for death penalty
Some demanding capital punishment for the rapists , some chanting slogans against government’s apathy, some protesting against Delhi police laxity, the angry protesters are demanding justice for the 23-year-old paramedical student, who was raped by a gang of six men in a moving bus in Delhi on Sunday night.

Former Army chief General VK Singh on Saturday reached India Gate in support of the gang-rape victim and said that the  situation is “sad and pathetic”.

Emphasising that providing security is the sworn duty of every government functionary the retired General said, “Law and order is deteriorating and needs to be improved.”

The gang-rape of a young student in a moving bus here is indicative of the "complete collapseof governance", former Army chief Gen V K Singh  as he accused the police of becoming "nothing more than security agencies" of VVIPs in the capital.
Singh said the system stands "completely exposed and defanged" as not just one daughter on the ill fated bus was at the mercy of this system, but hundreds others are equally vulnerable to predators in the face of "growing impotency" to take any action.

"The brutal assault and the heinous gang-rape of a 23-year-old in a bus moving around the city with impunity is indicative of the complete collapse of governance...This case has to be a watershed.

"I pray for this brave girl's survival and my thoughts are with her family. We cannot let this go the Jessica Lal way, where if it was not for the efforts of her family, her killer would be back in business. The system has received its gravest warning - we must awaken before it is too late," he said in a statement.

Emphasising that providing security is the sworn duty of every government functionary, especially those in police and the judiciary, he said instead seemingly "we have a situation where almost on a daily basis, every institution of governance is being eroded".

"Today, the very agencies entrusted with policing the state and maintaining law and order have become nothing more than security agencies for the rich and famous, the so-called 'VVIP class' of Delhi. For an average citizen, getting a case registered even when grievously wronged is a virtual impossibility, let alone getting any form of justice," he said.
