How meaningful will be Kajol and Aishwarya’s comebacks?

There is never ending guess work going on in media circles about Kajol making a comeback. Aishwarya Rai is going to be welcomed by her fans in Jazba shortly. There was speculation that Urmila Matondkar was getting an offer to return to the screen. Comebacks always make news but comebacks necessarily don’t get terrific response unless the vehicle is irresistible and well tailored to suit the actor’s age and personality at the time of the return. The mistake of trying to position Madhuri Dixit as the diva she was at the time of her exit was made by the Yash Raj Studios bosses when the Studio brought her back with a dance oriented film Aaja Nachle. True dancers don’t age and the art form too does not impose age bars on its exponents. But that is only for dancers when they perform live before an enlightened audience. In the make believe medium of cinema it does not work. The halls are packed when Vyjayantimala performs still. The actress –dancer who celebrated her seventy ninth birthday yesterday in Chennai has refused all offers to return to movies with dance oriented subjects because she is well aware of the pitfall. Of course, Madhuri made up for the mistake with a vengeance when she graced the small screen as the prime judge in the dance reality show Jhalak Dikhla Jaa that took the TV industry by storm largely because of her presence. It worked the same wonder for Madhuri that KBC worked for Amitabh Bachchan, I would say.
