At lunch, India were 410 for four in 121 overs, after adding 83 runs in 31 overs to their overnight score of 323 for four.

Pujara was unconquered on 133 after having batted for nearly six sessions while Yuvraj was unbeaten on 72 after a  stay of 174 minutes.  While the right-handed Punjara hit 16 fours in 274 balls, the left-handed Yuvraj had six hits to the fence and two over
it off 140 balls.

In the morning, needing just two runs to reach his second 100 in only his sixth Test, the 24-year-old Pujara got them in singles in nine balls that he faced in the morning.

Yuvraj, the other not out batsman who had played his previous Test one year ago against the West Indies, also moved along from his last evening's score of 24 to complete his fifty after the first hour of play with a four off Graeme Swann.

The pair also completed their century partnership for the fifth wicket in 204 balls, to pile on more agony on the visitors. It was the second three-figure stand for India in the game, after openers Virender Sehwag ? who made a flamboyant 117 ? and Gautam Gambhir had raised 134 yesterday.

The two overnight batsmen were unruffled this morning on the slow-paced, low-bounce wicket.Confronted by England's only successful bowler yesterday, Swann, from one end and pace in the form of Stuart Broad at the other, the fifth wicket pair went about their task of consolidating yesterday's position in a calm and collected manner.NNN

Virender Sehwag cracked a blistering 117 while Cheteshwar Pujara compiled a stroke-filled unbeaten 98 as India dominated England’s bowlers to finish at 323 for 4 at the end of day one of the first Test  at the Sardar Patel Stadium, Motera, Ahmedabad.

Pujara (98) and Yuvraj (24) are the overnight batsmen and they would ideally look to bat for two more sessions so that they put up a big first innings total.

England on the other hand would be looking to pick up a few quick wickets.

England would have been happier with five or six wickets by stumps on the opening day of the first cricket Test, according to off-spinner Graeme Swann, who said destructive opener Virender Sehwag took the game away
with his blistering run-a-ball 117 today.

"They are in a very strong position. The first session they undoubtedly won. Arguably the other two were even. Having lost the toss and bowled first on that pitch we'd have likedfive or six wickets but we'll take four," said Swann, who was the standout performer for the visitors with his 4-85 haul.

"If we had five or six it would have been an exceptional day for us and would have knocked 60 runs off the total," he added. Swann credited Sehwag for taking the game away with his first Test century in two years.

You have to hand it to Viru the way he played at the start. The way Viru batted he really took the game away from us in the first couple of hours so it was very important to pull it back. We know he can be destructive, he's done it against us before," Swann said.

The second new ball is still just 3 overs old so they would be looking to make full use of it and trouble the Indian batsmen. Swann will again be their main bowler and England`s fortunes will depend to a large extent on how the champion spinner performs.

Brief report on Day 1

India close day one on 323-4

Virender Sehwag cracked his 23rd Test century  with a solid batting display to take control of the first cricket Test against England  while Cheteshwar Pujara was just two runs short of his ton as the hosts cruised to 323 for four at close on the opening day.

Sehwag 117; Gambhir 45; Pujara 98 not out

MS Dhoni opted to bat on a dry pitch, the tone for India’s domination was set by the openers, Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir, who laid the platform with a 134-run opening stand – their first century alliance in 20 innings and one that surpassed the record of ten between Sunil Gavaskar and Chetan Chauhan.
