Yeddyurappa to meet supporters on Tuesday for new political party Last Updated : 06 Nov 2012 12:42:31 PM IST Yeddyurappa to meet supporters on Tuesday for new political party
BJP leader B S Yeddyurappa is hosting a luncheon meeting of his supporters on Tuesday thus intensifying his moves to float a new political party in December, ignoring pleas by his party leaders not to quit.
Through this meet it will become clear exactly how many of them are willing to join his proposed political outfit.
It is being assessed that around 30-35 followers of Yeddyurappa are expected to attend the meeting. However, former central minister Dhanajay Kumar said, “Around 70 MLAs and good number of MPs are expected to attend the meeting. The meeting has been called to prepare ourselves for the proposed rally on December 10.”
Today's luncheon exercise will come as a dampener to efforts by some BJP leaders, including Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar and state unit President K S Eswarappa, to stop Yeddyurappa from leaving the party keeping in mind its prospects in the assembly polls to be held early next year.
In another development, the BJP central leadership has deputed its General Secretary and in-charge of Karnataka affairs Dharmendra Pradhan to the city to take stock of the troubled situation faced by the party. BJP sources said Pradhan will be meeting Ministers and MPs on November 7.
Yeddyurappa wants that his political outfit should be accord a secular identity and for that he has started to net leaders of other parties especially from minority communities .
On Sunday, Congress leader and former minister Jabbar Khan Honnalli and some of his followers joined the KJP at Hubli in the presence of Yeddyurappa.
The former chief minister, who has been repeatedly announcing plans to quit to the party, has invited about 100 leaders, including ministers and legislators, to the lunch at his Dollar Colony residence.
"There was a suggestion from many that they had not met me for a long. I thought of hosting a lunch to provide an occasion for this meeting", Yeddyurappa said in Shimoga about tomorrow's event.
Sources close to Yeddyurappa claim issues like preparations for the December 10 conclave planned at Haveri, where the new party would be launched, would be discussed. Yeddyurappa is also likely to entrust responsibilities to his legislators and ministers loyal to him but they would not quit BJP right now, sources said.
Sources could not say whether Pradhan would meet Yeddyurappa to persuade him not to leave BJP. Yeddyurappa has already declared that he would resign from BJP and also his assembly membership by first week of December. But the leader has not clarified why he would wait till December to quit BJP when he has already made up his mind to float a new party.
Yeddyurappa clarified that Jagadish Shettar had been made Chief Minister to ensure the BJP government completed its term. “However till the completion of the term, it is inevitable for MLAs and Ministers supporting me to play the double role,” he said.
“Mr Shettar’s government should complete its term and the organisational activities to build my regional party should also happen. MLAs and Ministers supporting me will efficiently handle both the responsibilities”, he said.
The former Chief Minister, B.S. Yeddyurappa, who announced the formation of his own regional political outfit in December, has approached the Election Commission for its registration.
Informed sources said lieutenants of . Yeddyurappa contacted the EC a few days ago seeking details of procedures. There are also reports that he may join hands with Prasanna Kumar of Karnataka Janata Paksha (KJP), which is already a registered party with the EC since April 2011. It is not clear whether the Lingayat leader will go in for a new party or adopt the KJP after which the Commission has to be informed about the new office-bearers.Source: IANS, Other Agencies, Staff Reporters
