Two students from Bihar doing engineering in a private college in Salem district in Tamil Nadu were arrested on Saturday on the charge of duping elderly people of thousands of rupees by replacing their ATM cards with fake ones under the guise of helping them, police said.
Two other students, also hailing from Bihar, had left for their home only on Sundayday and a special police team had been sent there to arrest them, city Police Commissioner K C Mahali told reporters in Salem.
The modus operandi of the four students was that they would lay in wait near ATMs. When senior citizens come to withdraw money, the accused used to volunteer help and under the pretext exchange their ATM cards with fake cards.
Then they used the original cards to withdraw money, Mahali said adding around Rs 10 lakh had been swindled by them so far.
Using the money, they had bought a luxury car, he added.
Pramoth Kumar and Abhishek Kumar of Gaya district were arrested today when they tried to cheat an elderly man, the Commissioner said.
