Tehelka editor Tarun Tejpal (File Photo)

India’s one of the senior investigative journalists Tarun Tejpal, who exposed many corruption cases including BJP’s former party president Bangaru Laxman accepting bribe in a defence deal, is now facing sexual assault case.

Tehelka’s correspondent has accused Tarun Tejpal of sexually assaulting during Tehelka’s ‘Think’ seminar in Goa.

Meanwhile, Tejpal has confessed to the crime and tendred written apology to his woman colleague. Tejpal also took six-month leave as atonement for his act.

However, Tarun Tejpal might be arrested by the Goa police after Chief Minister Manohar Parikkar ordered probe into the matter.

In her complaint to Tehelka Managing Editor Shoma Choudhary, the victim says, "It is extremely painful for me to write this email to you – I have struggled with finding an easier way to say it, but there isn’t one. The editor in chief of Tehelka, Tarun Tejpal, sexually assaulted me at Think on two occasions last week. From the very first moment, I wanted to call you, or find you and tell you what he had done to me – but given how absorbed you were at Think; preparing for and conducting sessions, and the fact that it was impossible for the two of us to get even a minute alone together, I could not. To add to this, I had to process the fact that it was Tarun who molested me — my father’s ex colleague and my best friend’s dad, and someone I had so deeply respected and admired for so many years."

“I hope you will also understand how traumatic and terrifying it has been for me to report this to you — and yet how critical it is that Tehelka constitute an anti sexual harassment cell as per the Vishakha guidelines immediately, to investigate this matter. At the very least, I will need a written apology from Mr Tejpal and an acknowledgement of the same to be circulated through the organization. It cannot be considered acceptable for him to treat a female employee in this way.”

Tejpal offers fullest cooperation to police

Breaking his silence in the sexual assault case, Tehelka Editor Tarun Tejpal today offered to extend the "fullest cooperation" to the police and all other authorities and expressed readiness to present all the facts of this incident to them.
In a statement issued soon after a case was filed against him in Goa, Tejpal said he had "tried to do what was honorably demanded of me" and issued an apology for the "alleged misconduct" as demanded by the victim.
"There have been serious allegations cast on me in this last week, and unfortunately as sometimes happens in life, the complete truth and the need to do the honorable thing can come into conflict," he said.
Tejpal said that in this case, "this anguish was accentuated by the fact that very many intimate people, professional and personal, were involved".
"I offer my fullest cooperation to the police and all other authorities, and look to presenting all the facts of this incident to it," the founder-Editor of Tehelka said.
"I also urge the committee and the police to obtain, examine and release the CCTV footage so that the accurate version of events stands clearly revealed," he added.
Narrating details of the events that occurred after the incident came to light, Tejpal said, "For four days, as demanded by Shoma Chaudhury, the Managing Editor (of Tehelka), and the recipient of the complaint, I have tried to do what was honorably demanded of me.
"On Tuesday, I issued an apology for the alleged misconduct, as desired by the journalist through Shoma Chaudhury.
"On Wednesday, I stepped down from the editorship of Tehelka and removed myself from the office premises.
"On Thursday, I learnt of the formation of the complaints committee."
Tejpal has been under severe attack for the alleged incident with demands for action against him under the law.

It is now known for several decades that the press is far from pure as the wind driven snow. THe use of their power has significantly denuded the respect comman people had for them. In spite of knowing this the "press" as a collective group has done nothing to institute a mechanism to raise thier standards of journalism and a self correcting method. For example for the last two nights all news channels are full of questions all leading and most surprisingly based on unverified source content. All the anchors must be ashamed of themselves. IT WOULD BE A GREAT SUPRISE IF THE "PRESS" WERE TO CHANGE. CHANGE IS AGAINST THEIR COLLECTIVE ENLIGHTENED SELF INTEREST.

had great respect for Tarun Tejpal, the courageous fighter against corruption. Now it seems Bangaru Laxman is a far better person than Tarun. This is not an isolated incident, people who fight for morality in public life and for truth should be of high character. What a fall Mr.Tejpal!!!!

Deplorabe. Alongwith tejpal, the person who is addressed in this complaint should be prosecuted. She is an accomplice as she has (a) deliberately not reported a serious offence to the police (b) sheilded the offender (c) in this manner, helped in perpetrating the grievous offence. Additionally, being a mentor and also a woman , she has not protected her junior neither has she handled the matter with any sensitivity. While this journalist has shown the courage to raise her voice, there could very many working under Tejpal who would have been scared / embarassed to file a complaint or may have been coerced from doing so by Tejpal and his ilk. Sad but true - be it the uneducated bus driver in Nirbhaya or the vanguard Tarun tejpal of Tehelka - they behave the same. And with impunity! Shame on you - tejpal and choudhary - you are a disgrace.

Sue tehelka to high glory, Dont spare them, file a police complaint. Tehelka should compensate handsomely and Tarun Tejpal should be fired from HIS publication so what if he founded it. Resigning is not an option, The organisation should protect its employees first and foremost. Just because people are working there doesnt mean that they are easy prey for any kind of atrocity. Disgusted by this whole incident.

The "investigative" journalist Tarun Tejpal has turned into a "probing" journalist. In the lexicon of his professional expertise, unabashed sexual molestation seems to be a substitute for light and friendly "banter". The way he has been conducting himself by treating the shamelessly created situation as if it were part of his duties as editor and the way he is trying to expiate his deliberate sins of commission by "standing down" for six months, shows his sense of crookedness. And his media cronies are calling it "self exile" and making a martyr of him with the intent of putting all the blame on the victim. Tarun Tejpal has acted like big daddy of Asaram Bapu. T T is not standing down, he is standing up.

it is extreme courage which the young lady have done. she deserves to be applauded, appreciated and should be awarded at very high level for the courage shown and a proper way shown for all such victims in our dirty society. what is most appreciable is her professional integrity of performing her duties in spite of the trauma which she had. valuable lesson to all young females to share their plight with their colleagues, his daughter and now with the highest management in Tehalka. Mr Tarun Tejpal shall be divested of all his holdings from Tehalka to keep the institution alive. I salute the lady, some day I will give it to my own daughter to learn and understand and be more confident in life

It's unbelievable. We cannot think this in Indian perspective. But still it has been the reality. It will be discussed in media, papers public gossip etc. They will recommend some law, stringent action etc. Already those are there. Still it is happening. The only way to prevent these is to lay importance in Indian thought, Hindu way of life. Papers media are detracting us from this. They are making business just selling western culture to us. Tarun has been a unmindful product of his profession and business. Let us live and hold high the Hindu life style. N K Maity

i'm hurt, i'm disturbed, i'm disillusioned and i'm angry. sexual violence is not acceptable in any part of society but that this should happen at tehelka and by tarun, both of who i have hugely admired and respected as the last bastion of honest and brutal truth, is deeply disappointing at a basic, human level. all gods have feet of clay. and no simply not attending office for 6 months is far from being adequate or appropriate. i feel so, so sorry for the young girl in question and do hope tarun stands up for what tehelka is and stands for and does the honorable and right thing by seeking just punishment. the idea of tehelka is simly too important to be martyred at the altar of one tarun...

Sad that the Editor should lose his balance to mount an assault on a lady colleague. No excuse however for the drunken the 'banter' be. Even a senior editor did not consider it her duty to come to the rescue of the lady in question, but blatantly and unsuccessfully attempted to throw some cover on the incident by first calling it a private matter, or internal affair. Even the person in question now seems to make innuendoes making the encounter consensual. By repeating the innuendo the lady editor tended to tilt the case against the victim!! This shows how money power can overturn the reputation and let loose a sort of smear campaign that goes a buzz in the channels.

Knowing dick head indian police , this is my suggestion how to nail the nihari pandher look alike rapist monster Tejpal. In consensual sex "you don't need to ATONE and lacerate and recuse for six months. Further you don't send texts threatening the hapless girl , nor you write it as grave misjudgement. END OF THE DAY IT IS THE JUDGE , 100 JETHMALANI SHOULDN'T BE ABLE TO SWING IT . IT is a simple matter of judge believing the girl's version WHICH IS PRETTY OBVIOUS , given THE GRAPHIC DETAILS she had given in her Email and IMMEDIATELY SHE SPOKE TO HER JOUNO COLLEAGUES AND SOME BODY IN ADDIS ABBABA You don't do such things in consensual sex, any braindead person also knows. Shoma should be booked for hushing up the case and not reporting to police , AGAIN IT IS SO STARK a case of trying to obfuscate and sweep it under the carpet , which is same as protecting a CRIMINAL , which is no different from protecting a terrorist.
