Kashmir's all-girls band:Police file FIR against online abusers

Jammu and Kashmir Police has registered a case and identified several Facebook users who had posted abusive and threatening messages on the page of the only all-girls music rock band Pragaashof the Valley.

"A case under Section 66 A of the IT Act and Section 506 RPC (Criminal Intimidation) has been registered in police station Rajbagh with regard to the hate messages posted on the Facebook page of the Pragaash band," a police spokesman said
today."Arrests are likely to be made in the next couple of days," he added.

He said the investigations are in full swing but refused to give any details. However, an official associated with the investigation said police have been able to identify at least six persons who had posted hate messages with the help of experts from the cyber crime cell.

"So far half a dozen Facebook users who had posted hate messages have been identified while efforts are on to identify the others," the official said on the condition of anonymity.

He said the Facebook page of the band had received a large number of posts -- mostly critical -- and it would take some time to sift through all of them.

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah was among a large number of political leaders who extended their unflinching support to the girls, urging them not to quit singing because of a "bunch of morons". The hardline Hurriyat led by Syed Ali Shah Geelani also criticised the Grand Mufti.

Online Threats,Fatwa against Kashmir's all-girls band

The teenage girls, who came to limelight in late December last year after their scintillating performance at the annual 'Battle of the Bands' competition  received online threats and absurd comments, leaving their parents a worried lot and forcing them to keep a low profile.

Within days after their performance at the annual 'Battle of the Bands' competition in Srinagar , the band started receiving online threats and absurd comments which was followed up with a 'fatwa' (religious decree) issued by Grand Mufti Bashiruddin Ahmad .

Hurriyat Conference spokesman AyazAkbar said some youngsters posting abuses on social networking sites cannot be termed as threat, adding Hurriyat does not support such abuse or coercion and force in any way.

The girls had defied the convention by stepping into the male-dominated bastion and faced online threats and abuses from conservative sections of the society.

The first all-girl band of Kashmir decided to call it quits in the wake of a 'fatwa' issued by Grand Mufti terming singing as un-islamic, a remark that came under all round attack.
Chief minister Omar Abdullah told that the fatwa is against spirit of Kashmiriyat and promised full security to the girls if they wish to continue singing.

Kashmir's all-girl rock band Pragaash, meaning moving towards light, on Monday disbanded in the face of frenzied opposition from hardliners in the Valley.

"Noma quits", "Farah quits also", read their Facebook page.

It all started after school girls Noma Nazir, Farah Deeba and Aneeka Khalid performed for the first time in December last year.

Jammu and Kashmir Reactions on Fatwa

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah was among a large number of political leaders who gave their unflinching support to the girls, urging them not to quit singing becauseof a "bunch of morons". The hardline Hurriyat led by Syed Ali Shah Geelani also criticised the Grand Mufti.

The 10th-class students -- vocalist-guitarist Noma Nazir, drummer Farah Deeba and guitarist Aneeka Khalid -- had formed a band "Pragash" and performed in December last year with ascintillating performance at the annual 'Battle of the Bands' competition in Srinagar and won the best performance award in their first public appearance.

Jitendra singh, BJP president, Jammu and Kashmir said " It is an attempt towards 'Talibanisation' of the society by certain fundamentalist groups who are uncomfortable with the return of normalcy in Jammu and Kashmir."

Mehbooba Mufti, president of People's Democratic Party (PDP) said " The government should look into the abuses and threats made by some people to the girls on the Facebook. It is a problem that needs to be sorted out.

Digvijaya Singh, general secretary, Congress: I have always said that whether it is ideology of the Hindu fundamentalist or Muslim fundamentalist, it will take the country back to 18th century. Congress is a moderate liberal party. We cannot support such things.

Hardline Hurriyat distances itself from grand mufti's decree

The hardline faction of Hurriyat Conference today distanced itself from the 'decree' issued by grand mufti of Jammu and Kashmir, that had termed singing as "un-Islamic", even as it dismissed the reported threats to the Valley's maiden all-girls rock-band as "mere propaganda".

"We disassociate ourselves from the 'fatwa' issued by Mufti Bashiruddin ( grand mufti of Jammu and Kashmir). People do not recognise him as grand mufti (chief cleric)... Only the government recognises him," Hurriyat Conference spokesman Ayaz
Akbar told .

Akbar termed the decrees issued by the grand mufti as "mysterious" saying such things give rise "lawlessness in the society".

"It is mysterious...The way he issues fatwas...It arises lawlessness," Akbar said, adding fatwas can be issued only when a nation is governed under Shariah rule.

The Hurriyat spokesman also dismissed as "mere propaganda" the reported threats to the rock-band 'Pragaash',saying "a big bomb is being made out of the issue"."There is no threat to the girls. Nobody has issued any threats. It is a mere propaganda by Indian media and they are making a big bomb out of a normal issue to defame Kashmiris," he said.
