Ponty Chadha murder mystery: Cops track clues for Third party involvement Last Updated : 20 Nov 2012 01:16:08 PM IST File photo
Delhi Police finally managed to piece together the sequence of events leading to the deaths of liquor baron Ponty Chadha and his younger brother Hardeep in a bloody shootout in their luxurious farmhouse in south Delhi on Saturday.
As per a report in English newspaper , initial postmortem findings have cast doubts on the police claims that the brothers died in firing following a heated argument.
Doctors at AIIMS, who conducted the post-mortem and forensic examination, said both the brothers had sustained almost same number of bullet wounds – over a dozen. However, what’s significant is the fact that while four bullets were taken out from Ponty's body, Hardeep’s had none.
Police however have denied recovering any local weapon.
"Apart from an AK-47, we have recovered only two weapons. Both are licenced pistols," said Vivek Gogia, joint CP (southwestern range).
According to sources, there is a strong possibility that a third party could have carried out the shooting if the theory of Ponty being shot from a distance and Hardeep from close range is true. However, there is no evidence yet to prove the same
New details emerged on Monday about the bloody shootout that led to the death of business tycoon and liquor baron Ponty Chadha and his brother Hardeep ,according to preliminary investigations, Ponty had 'trespassed' into the farmhouse- Farm No. 42 at DLF Farms, Chhattarpur - angering Hardeep, who rushed there from Noida where he was in a meeting.
Ponty accompanied by his friend Sukhdev Singh Namdhari, who heads the Uttarakhand minorities commission, had arrived at the farmhouse reportedly to take over the property.
Some family members have, however, denied the police claims that the bloodbath was the result of a property dispute gone awry.
According to the First Information Report (FIR) filed by Ponty Chadha's family friend Sukhdev Singh Namdhari, it was Hardeep Chadha who started firing from a pistol. The younger brother first opened fire at his elder brother's security manager Narendra, who is now undergoing treatment.
But, according to police, after investigations they have found that Hardeep was actually attending a meeting in Noida, adjoining Delhi, when he was informed by his security guards that his elder brother along with 30-40 men had entered the disputed property. Hardeep then rushed to the farmhouse where a heated argument erupted between the two brothers.
Police investigations also showed that Narendra tried to intervene in the argument that led an angry Hardeep opening fire.
Bahuguna hints at Namdhari's removal
Uttarakhand Chief Minister Vijay Bahuguna hinted that State Minority Commission chairman Sukhdev Singh Namdhari, who was present during the shootout at a farmhouse in Delhi in which liquor baron Ponty Chaddha and his brother were killed, might be removed.
"His (Namdhari's) tenure is yet to be over. But the state administration will act and find a way out to remove him," the Chief Minister told reporters here in reply to a question.
Namdhari was appointed chairman of the Uttarakhand Minority Commission during the BJP rule in 2010.His association with Chaddha came under scanner when it came to light that he was present along with his PSO Sachin Tyagi, an Uttarakhand Police constable, at the time of the shootout at the farmhouse in which Ponty Chaddha and his brother Hardeep were killed.
The name of Namdhari's PSO has also cropped up in connection with the incident prompting state DGP Satyavrat Bansal to send a team to the national capital to ascertain facts about his alleged role in the incident.
Tyagi allegedly fired a few shots during the shootout to protect himself and his protectee.A police team headed by Inspector Pramod Shah had been sent to Delhi to find out facts about alleged role of Tyagi, the DGP said.
He said some cases were lodged against Namdhari in Uttarakhand. The DGP, however, added he could not say anything about the type of cases and in which part of the state these were registered.
But in the police complaint given by Namdhari, he mentioned that Hardeep was with his gunmen and personal security officer when they reached the disputed farmhouse -- over which the two brothers were fighting for ownership.
According to Namdhari's version, after injuring Narendra, Hardeep then came towards them and started firing indiscriminately at Ponty who was getting out of the car.
Namdhari hid behind the car to avoid being hit by the bullets.
The FIR also stated that Namdhari's security person, Sachin Tyagi, provided by the Uttarakhand government, opened fire in defence. As Tyagi continued firing, the younger brother entered the farmhouse.
But, the police are still probing whether only Hardeep opened fire or whether his PSOs were also involved in the shootout that resulted in the death of the two brothers.
Police were also investigating who all were involved in the firing.Namdhari said that with the help of his driver, he took bullet- riddled Ponty to Fortis Hospital in Vasant Kunj where he was declared dead.
After the bloodbath, when police reached the spot at 12.20 pm, they found Hardeep's body. The police also found several weapons, including an AK-47 rifle, two pistols, bullets and cartridges. The first call was made to police at 12.15 pm. Police also received two more calls -- the second one at 1.15 p.m. and then the final one at 2.30 pm. The caller just informed police that a fight had broken out in the farmhouse.
