Blood Donation Day: What ails the blood donation sector

According to a 2012 World Health Organisation (WHO) report, only nine million units are collected annually, while the need is for 12 million units.India, being a country of population 1.2 billion , the country faces a blood shortage of 3 million units, this prolem can be solved if an additional 2% of Indians would donate blood. Records shows that there are 234 million major operations in India, 63 million trauma-induced surgeries, 31 million cancer-related procedures and 10 million pregnancy related complications which require blood transfusions. And the shortage of blood arises because of the lack of donors. In the case of emergency, people rely on professional donors who donate blood on a regular basis for money. Only the awareness is needed, by which many myths related to blood donation can be cleared and we get a number of donors.
